Business school case competitions require students to demonstrate their ability to solve a realistic business challenge in competition with one another. Individual students, or groups of students, are provided with a case, for which they must prepare and possibly enact a solution.
Case competitions also offer the opportunity for business students to meet people locally, nationally or internationally, thereby providing excellent networking potential while at the same time testing crucial skills. Business school case competitions can be local, state-wide, national or international. They may be focused on a particular area of business specialization, such as international commerce, finance or management.
Some well-known business school case competitions include the John Molson MBA International Case Competition, based out of the John Molson School of Business in Montreal, Canada; the IKEA International Case Competition, sponsored by IKEA and held out of the Foster School of Business in Washington; the Scotiabank International Case Competition, based out of the Richard Ivey School of Business in Ontario, Canada; and the NIBS International Undergraduate Case Study Competition, hosted at different business schools world-wide.
